Fancy Grilled Cheese
Indulge in the ultimate comfort food elevated to gourmet heights with a fancy grilled cheese featuring brown sugar onions. This tantalizing creation begins with thick slices of artisanal bread toasted to golden perfection. Between the slices, a symphony of flavors unfolds: creamy, melted cheese oozes with each bite, while caramelized onions infused with brown sugar add a luxurious sweetness and depth. The onions, slow-cooked to perfection, bring a delicate balance to the richness of the cheese, creating a harmonious blend of savory and sweet. With each bite, the crispy exterior gives way to a molten center, making this elevated grilled cheese a culinary delight that satisfies the most discerning palates.
Ingredients
- 4 slices Gruyère
- 4 slices Gouda
- 4 sliced havarti
- 1 onion finely diced
- 1.5 tbsps brown sugar
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp butter
- 8 slices thick but brioche bread
Instructions
- Heat large griddle to medium low heat.
- Into a small skillet, add the oil. Once hot, add in the diced onion.
- Cook onion down approximately 10 minutes until very soft.
- Add brown sugar to onion and mix continuously. This will stop the brown sugar from burning. Once brown sugar is fully melted and covering the onions, turn off heat.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread and put buttered side down in the warm griddle.
- Layer bread with cheese. I did this with 1.5 slices on each piece of bread.
- Once you see the cheese beginning to melt, add about a tablespoon of the onions on top of one side of the bread.
- Once the cheese is melted, add the side without onions to the opposite side with the onions. Allow to brown, flipping if need be.
- Remove once both sides are brown to your liking. Enjoy!
