French Onion Meatballs

French onion meatballs are a delightful twist on the classic appetizer, combining the savory flavors of French onion soup with tender meatballs. These meatballs are made from a blend of ground beef, delicious seasoning packets, and cheese, then simmered in a rich and flavorful French onion sauce. The sauce, reminiscent of the traditional soup, features beef broth, and a hint of parmesan cheese, creating a luscious coating for the meatballs. Topped with melted Gruyère or Swiss cheese and served with crusty bread for dipping, French onion meatballs are a delicious and comforting dish perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1lb ground beef
  • 1 packet beefy onion soup mix
  • 2 onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 4c beef broth
  • 12 ounces Egg noodles
  • 1/2c Parmesan cheese
  • 6 slices of Gruyère
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

Step 1: Make meatballs by mixing the ground beef, the onion soup mix, the egg, parm cheese and pepper to taste. Don’t add salt as the cheese and soup mix are salty. Form into about 1.5 inch sized meatballs. Set aside.

Step 2: Add 1 tablespoon each of oil and butter to the bottom of a Dutch oven. On low heat, add in your onions and cook until they begin to brown. Remove and set aside.

Step 3: Turn Dutch oven heat up to medium high. Add in the rest of the oil and butter. Sear off meatballs. They do not need to be fully cooked at this point. Turn heat down to low. Add in your beef stock, and add back in your onions. Cook the meatballs until cooked all the way through. About 10 minutes. Top with Gruyère cheese and turn off heat and put on lid to let cheese melt.

Step 4: While meatballs are cooking boil water to cook your noodles. Cook according to package directions. Drain and return to pan.

Step 5: Mix the cornstarch and water. Pour into the broth mixture and heat until the sauce thickens.

Step 6: Assemble. Start with noodles on the bottom and top with the meatballs and Gruyère cheese. Add on extra sauce as desired. Enjoy!
